5-8. CYLINDER HEAD MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS - Continued
CLEANING
W A R N I N G
P-D-680, Type III, is moderately toxic to
the skin, eyes and respiratory tract;
avoid prolonged exposure. Skin and
eye protection is required. Good ventila-
tion is required. Do not use near open
flame or excessive heat. Flash point is
200° F (93.3 C).
1.
Clean all parts in dry cleaning solvent and dry
thoroughly.
2.
Ensure that all carbon is cleaned off bottom of
the cylinder head (7).
INSPECTION
1.
Inspect threaded fasteners for stripped threads or
other damage.
2.
Inspect the breather valve (13) for looseness or
other damage (missing check ball in breather).
3.
Inspect the valve seats on bottom of cylinder
head (7) for scoring or excessive wear (Para.
5-9).
REPAIR
1.
Replace any part found defective during inspec-
tion
2.
If replacement is necessary, remove defective
stud(s) (10, 11, or 12). Install replacement stud,
tightening securely.
3.
If replacement is necessary, pull defective
breather valve (13) from bore in cylinder head. In-
stall replacement breather valve, seating fully to
the shoulder on the valve.
ASSEMBLE/INSTALLATION
1.
If removed, install the valves in the cylinder
head (7), (Para. 5-9).

Coat new preformed packing (9) with small
amount of engine lubricating oil and install in cyl-
inder head (7), seating in groove of bore for push
rod tube (8).
Install the push rod tube (8) in cylinder head (7),
pushing the tube well through the bore.
Carefully install the assembled cylinder head (7)
onto the cylinder head studs and seat on top of
cylinder.
Install lift bracket (6) on stud in location shown,
and secure with nut (4).
Install three flat washers (5) and nuts (4) on re-
maining cylinder head studs. Using torque
wrench, tighten nuts (4) to 20 - 23 ft.-lbs. (27 - 31
Nm).
Seat the push rod tube (8) down on the compres-
sion release and secure with retaining spring (3),
flat washers (2) and locknuts (1). Tighten nuts se-
curely.
Install and adjust rocker arms and push rods
(Para. 5-7).
Install fuel injector (Para. 5-4).
10. Connect fuel lines (Para. 4-29).
11. Install valve cover (Para. 4-33).
12. Install muffler (Para. 4-31).
13. Install air cleaner (Para. 4-27).
NOTE
Follow-on tasks include: Return compactor
to service.
