Remove the engine from the compactor
(Para. 5-3).
Remove the cylinder head (Para. 5-8).
Remove the piston assembly (Para. 5-12).
Slowly crank the engine to bring the connecting
rod to bottom dead center (BDC) of its stroke.
Set the engine down on the flywheel to provide
access to the cover on bottom of the engine hous-
ing.
Remove six machine screws (1), cover (2), and
gasket (3). Discard the gasket.
Determine if connecting rod (7) or bearing halves
(8) require replacement by checking radial end
play of the connecting rod on the crankshaft jour-
nal as follows:
a.
Mount a dial indicator with stylus on the cen-
ter bottom of the connecting rod cap (6).
b.
Grasp the connecting rod (7) at the top and
pull up firmly, while dial is zeroed.
