5-11. CYLINDER MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS - Continued
INSTALLATION
NOTE
NOTE
Follow-on tasks include: Return compactor
to service.
If the cylinder requires replacement, it is
recommended that the piston and rings be
replaced also (Para. 5-12).
1. Install any studs (1 and 2) requiring replacement.
NOTE
The two shorter (2) are installed in
the positions toward the flywheel side of
the engine.

To install cylinder (3), it is necessary to remove.

Set the piston assembly (4) upslde down on
clean workbench, ensure that the gaps of piston
rings are staggered at 120° intervals.

Compression the piston rings with a ring compressor

Place the cylinder (3) upside down on a clean
workbench.
6.
Position the piston assembly (4) with ring com-
pressor on to the cylinder (3) and push the piston
a s s e m b l y c y l i n d e r .
7.
Remove the ring compressor and adjust position
of piston assembly (4) in cylinder so the piston
pin bore of piston is fully exposed below the cylin-
der (2) liner.
8.
Install the assembled cylinder and piston assem-
bly over studs (1 and 2), engaging the top of con-
necting rod with piston assembly (4).
9.
Install piston pin (5) in piston and connecting rod
bore, tapping with a plastic tipped hammer. Cen-
ter the piston pin and secure with replacement
lock rings (6)
10. Complete installation of cylinder (3) by pushing
down until seated into the crankcase.
11. Install the compression release (Para 5-10)

Install the cylinder head (Para 5-8)
