5-10. COMPRESSION RELEASE MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS - Continued
INSTALLATION
1,
If star handle (10) has been removed, install the
handle using loctite on threads of stem. Tighten
securely.
NOTE
Ensure that push rod tube (4) is in the
maximum raised position to enable the in-
stallation of the compression release (7).
2.
Install one 0.0157 in. (0.4 mm) thick gasket (9) on
compression release (7) and install compression
release in gear cover.
3.
Secure compression release (7) with two cap-
screws (8). Tighten capscrews securely.
4.
Lightly coat preformed packing (6) with engine Iu-
bricating oil and install in groove at top of com-
pression release (7).
5.
Slide push rod tube (4) down to the compression
release (7) and secure with retaining spring (3)
as shown, flat washers (2) and locknuts (1).
Tighten locknuts securely.
6.
Install and adjust rocker arms and push rods
(Para. 5-7).
7.
Ensure that the compression release is not acti-
vated, (turned fully counterclockwise) and crank
the engine to approximately 1/8 turn before pis-
ton reaches top dead center (TDC).
8.
Using depth gauge, measure the distance from
flat on top of support for rocker arm shaft and the
top flange of the intake valve spring collar. Re-
cord this dimension as X.
9.
Activate the compression release by turning the
star handle clockwise to the start position. Meas-
ure the distance again and record as Y.
10. The difference between the X and Y measure-
ment must be 0.0275 - 0.0354 in. (0.7 0.9 mm).
11. If difference is less than 0.0275 in. (0.7 mm), re-
move the compression release and replace the
gasket (9) with two 0.0118 in. (0.3 mm) gaskets
(9). In extreme cases, use one 0.0118 in. (0.3
mm) and one 0.0157 in. (0.4 mm) gasket. Rein-
stall the compression release and check meas-
urements again (steps 1 through 10).
12. If difference is greater than 0.0394 in. (1.0 mm),
remove the compression release and replace the
gasket (9) with one 0.0118 in. (0.3 mm) gas-
ket (9). Reinstall the compression release and
check measurements again (steps 1 through 10).
13. Install valve cover (Para. 4-33).
NOTE
Follow-on tasks include: Return compactor
to service.
