TM 5-3895-376-14&P
4-12. ENGINE MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS - Continued
g,
Discard used oil filter in accordance with local
policy.
h.
Coat gasket of new oil filter (4) with small
amount of engine lubricating oil.
i.
Threading clockwise, thread oil filter onto fit-
ting on front side of engine. Snug fit the oil fil-
ter by hand only enough to prevent leakage.
j.
Fill engine with engine lubricating oil, (Table 4-
1).
k.
Check oil level with dipstick (3). Oil level must
be at top mark on dipstick. Add oil as neces-
sary to bring to top mark.
I.
Ensure the oil fill plug is clean and install the
plug, and tighten firmly to seal gasket.
3.
After servicing the engine oil and installing a new
oil filter, observe filter for sign of oil leakage.
NOTE
Follow-on tasks include: Return compactor
to service.
1.
Unit maintenance testing of the engine consists
of an operational check for proper functioning of
the engine and a performance check of full load
engine speed.
NOTE
Testing of the oil pressure may also be
made by unit maintenance (Para. 4-35).
2.
Perform operational test as follows:
a.
Start the engine (Para. 2-5), and allow to
warm up for 2 - 3 minutes.
b.
Operate the engine at FULL SPEED throttle
and observe the following:
(1)
Listen for unusual noise.
(2)
Check all fuel line connections for signs of
leakage.
(3)
Check oil drain plug for signs of leakage.
(4)
Check oil filter for signs of leakage
(5)
Check for excessive (smoky) exhaust
c.
Stop the engine (Para. 2-7).
3.
Perform performance check as follows
a.
Remove the v-belt cover (Para. 4-24).
WARNING
Operation of the engine without the v-
belt cover installed, exposes mainte-
nance personnel to the v-belt and
centrifugal clutch/pulley in operation.
Keep hands and clothing away from op-
erating clutch and v-belt. Severe injury
may result if hands or clothing are
caught in the v-belt.
b.
Start the engine (Para. 2-5), and allow to
warm up for 2 - 3 minutes.
c.
Using a hand held mechanical tachometer, fit-
ted with a rubber cone tip, which is held
against the clutch hub at the center hex open-
ing, to read engine speed in revolutions per
minute (rpm). Move the throttle control to
FULL engine speed and observe reading on
tachometer. A properly performing engine
should be operating at a governed speed of
2850 rpm.
4.
Report any incident of irregular performance or
functioning of the engine to unit maintenance.
NOTE
Follow-on tasks include: Install the v-belt
cover (Para. 4-24).
