4-33. VALVE COVER MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Compactor set on level ground in protected area.
Engine off.
General Safety Instructions
Observe all WARNINGS and CAUTIONS
1.
Remove two hex nuts (1) and flat washers (2).
2.
Remove cover (3) and gasket (4). Discard gasket.
W A R N I N G
1.
Install new gasket (4) to sealing face of cylinder
head.
2.
Install cover (3) over studs and seat onto gasket
(4), being careful not to move gasket off sealing
face of cylinder head.
3.
Secure cover (3) with two flat washers (2) and
hex nuts (1), Tighten nuts to 6.6-7.4 ft-lbs (9-
10 Nm) torque with torque wrench.
P-D-660, Type Ill, Is moderately toxic to
the skin, eyes and respiratory tract;
avoid prolonged exposure. Skin and
eye protection is required. Good ventila-
tion is required. Do not use near open
flame or excessive heat. Flash point is
200° F (93.3° C).
1.
Clean all parts in dry cleaning solvent and dry
thoroughly.
2.
Ensure that all gasket material is removed from
both the cover (3) and the mating face of the cyl-
inder head.

Inspect cover (3) for dents or other damage.
2.
Inspect hex nuts (1) for stripped threads.
3.
Replace any part found defective.
NOTE
Follow-on tasks include: Return compactor
to service.
