MALFUNCTION
TEST OR INSPECTION
CORRECTIVE ACTION
1. Engine will not start
Step 1. Check for faulty fuel injector.
Remove, test and or replace fuel injector (Para. 5-4).
Step 2. Check fuel pump for improper adjustment..
Adjust the fuel pump (Para. 5-8).
Step 3. If compression is poor, check for loose cylinder head nuts.
Tighten the cylinder head nuts (Para. 5-8).
Step 4. If compression is poor, check for defective compression release.
Remove and replace the compression release (Para. 5-10).
Step 5. If compression is poor, check for sticking or improper seating of the valves.
Remove, clean and/or replace the valves (Para. 5-9).
Step 6. If compression is poor, check for piston rings that are stuck in grooves of piston.
Remove the piston and rings, and clean the piston and replace rings (Para. 5-12).
Step 7. Check for worn cylinder and or piston.
Replace cylinder and piston assembly (Para. 5-11 and Para. 5-12).
Step 8. Check for seized bearings.
Replace bearings on crankshaft (Para. 5-15 and 5-20) 5-20).
2. ENGINE STARTS BUT FIRES INTERMITTENTLY OR STALLS
Step 1. Check for faulty fuel injector.
Remove, test and or replace fuel injector (Para. 5-4).
Step 2. Check fuel pump for improper adjustment.
Adjust the fuel pump (Para. 5-5).
Step 3. If compression is poor, check for sticking or improper seating of the valves.
Remove, clean and/or replace the valves (Para. 5-9).
Step 4. If compression is poor, check for piston rings that are stuck in grooves of piston.
Remove the piston and rings. and clean the piston and replace rings (Para. 5-12).
Step 5. Check for worn cylinder and or piston.
Replace cylinder and piston assembly (Para. 5-11 and 5-12).
