5-17. GOVERNOR ASSEMBLY MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS - Continued
NOTE
Repair of the governor (8) consists of re-
placing the governor spring set (3, 4 and
7).
1.
Remove special round nut (2), idle spring (3), full
load spring (4), spring support (5), bridge (6), and
spacer (7) from one side of the governor (8).
2.
Repeat step 1 on other side of governor (8).
NOTE
Further disassembly of the governor will
destroy the governor.
3.
install new spring set as follows:
a.
Install spacer (7) on stud governor (8).
b.
Install spring support (5) on stud next to the
bridge spring.
c.
Install the bridge (6) and hold-centered over
spring support (5).
d.
Install full load spring (4), seating on shoulder
of spring support (5).
e.
Install idle spring (3), seating on shoulder of
bridge (6).
f.
Install special nut (2), seating both full load
spring (4) and idle spring (3) on shoulders of
nut. Tighten nut until flush with end of the
stud of governor.
g.
Repeat steps a. through f. on other governor
stud.

Secure the flywheel to prevent turning.
2 .
Apply loctite compound to threads of gover-
nor (8), and install on crankshaft, turning counter-
clockwise.
NOTE
The threads of the governor are left-hand.
3.
Using torque wrench, fitted with a 14 mm deep
socket, tighten the governor to 41 - 44 ft-lbs (55 -
60 Nm). Remove blocking from flywheel.
4.
Grease the governor pin (1) and install in the
bore of the governor hub.
5.
Install the gear cover (Para. 5-14).
6.
Adjust the governor (speed) control shaft
(Para. 5-16).
7.
Service the engine (Para. 4-12).
8.
Install the v-belt cover (Para. 4-24).
9.
Check engine rpm and if necessary, adjust the
governor speed control shaft (Para. 5-16) and/or
adjust the governor (Para. 5-17).
NOTE
Follow-on tasks include: Return compactor
to service.
